BBC Sex Abuse Scandal

LONDON - British police made arrests on Sunday in a widening investigation into the sexual abuse scandal surrounding BBC TV star Jimmy Savile.

Metropolitan Police did not identify the person who had been arrested, saying only that he was in the sixties. But the British media, including the BBC, many reported that the police are held in London in the 1970s pop star Gary Glitter, who is a convicted pedophile.A spokesman for Scotland Yard said the man was arrested shortly after 7 am Sunday arrest came as part of a widening police investigation known as Operation Yewtree, to "the alleged sexual crimes." "Jimmy Savile and others," the spokesman said.

Last week, police officials said that about 300 people have come forward claiming Mr Savile had attacked them. Before his death last year, Mr Savile was one of Britain's most famous TV host, known for his charity work, his tracksuits and lively colored her hair peroxided. He has long been dogged by rumors of inappropriate behavior toward underage girls. But the case did not go into the open until after the death of Mr Savile was at the age of 84. Both Mr Savile and Mr. Glitter has been accused of abusing young people in the BBC studio.
The BBC has come under sharp criticism after an investigation into the allegations against Mr Savile by the current affairs program "Newsnight" was abruptly canceled. Chris Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, which oversees the BBC, said in an article in The Sunday Mail that the BBC's "reputation is on the line" and that the organization "risks wasting public trust," as a result of the scandal.Mr Patten also apologized "unreservedly" to the victims who spoke to the program "Newsnight" "may in great personal pain, but do not have their story told as they had hoped."Mr Glitter, the glam-rock star, real name Paul Gadd, was convicted in Britain in 1999 on charges of possessing child pornography. He served nearly three years in prison in Vietnam for sexually abusing two girls, aged 11 and 12 years old.
